About Garry Martin
After receiving his elementary and
secondary education in Neepawa, Manitoba, where he had an active
career in youth and high school athletics in baseball, hockey,
track and football, Garry attended Colorado College on a hockey
scholarship, and earned letters in hockey and track while receiving
his B.A. Degree. He then received his M.A. and Ph.D degrees from
Arizona State University. He taught in the Department of Psychology
at the University of Manitoba from the fall of 1966 until his
retirement in 2008. He is now a DistinguishedProfessor Emeritus
at the University of Manitoba.
Garry Martin has co-authored or co-edited
8 books. His co-authored books on behavioral psychology are used
as primary texts at over 200 universities in 14 countries, and
have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese,
and Korean.
He has been an invited speaker at numerous
national and international conferences in 6 countries, and has
co-authored more than 150 papers, published in refereed journals,
on behavior modification/applied behavior analysis programming
and research in developmental disabilities, autism, behavior therapy,
organizational behavior management, and sport psychology.
He has supervised 38 Masters theses
and 32 PhD theses at the University of Manitoba, served as an
external PhD thesis examiner for 8 other universities, and served
on the editorial board of 7 psychology journals.
Garry served as a sport psychology
consultant to many of Manitoba's Provincial teams including field
hockey, swimming, synchronized swimming, junior tennis and figure
skating.
He provided sports psychology consultation
for individual, national level athletes in gymnastics, swimming,
diving, tennis, field hockey, figure skating, track and field,
and curling, and to professional athletes in hockey and golf.
He has received numerous honors and
awards including:

and Research in the Social Sciences at the University of Manitoba

- The Clifford J. Robson Distinguished
Psychologist in Manitoba Award, Presented by the Manitoba Psychological
Society - 1977
- Honorary Doctoral Degree from

- The Distinguished Service
Award from the Brazilian Association of Psychotherapy and Behavioral
Medicine - 2001
- Elected Fellow to the Royal
Society of Canada - 2001
- The Distinguished Service
Award from the Canadian Psychological Association - 2002
- The Professor of the Year
in the Faculty of Arts in the University of Manitoba - 2005
- The title of Distinguished
Professor, an honor bestowed on fewer than 1% of the Faculty
at the University of Manitoba - 2006
- The Dr. John M. Bowman Memorial,
Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation Award at the University of
Manitoba for Research that has impacted the field, both nationally
and internationally - 2006
- Inducted into the Manitoba
Baseball Hall of Fame, 2007, as a member of the Neepawa Cubs
Baseball Team from 1955-1960
